The species grows to 32 cm in length. Wings and back grey with large brown spots on wing feathers. Belly chestnut-beige with reddish-brown spots on flanks. Cheeks, breast and nape grey, dull brown crown, chestnut throat, black bill.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in eastern Asia and is endemic to Taiwan. It has been introduced in Japan but may be extirpated now. Lives in bamboo forests, bushy and grassy areas, to 1000 m.

Status : The species is locally common in suitable habitat and most of its populations seem to be stable. Locally threatened by habitat destruction.
