Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 89 cm for a weight of 1.5 kg and a wingspan of 1.20 m. Long decurved black bill. Head and neck bare with black skin. Most of plumage white to light beige with black feathers above tail. Black legs.

Range and habitat
This species lives in most of Subsaharan Africa and can also be found in Iraq. Formerly occurred in Egypt, now extinct. Found on intertidal and offshore islands, also near freshwater wetlands.

Status : This species is locally very common and faces no known threats. Feral populations live in several countries outside Africa.
