Notes : No subspecies known.
Adults can grow to 65 cm in length. Pinkish cheek patch. Plumage mostly black with all white belly and undertail. Bill light-yellow with small black base. Large crescent-shaped casque with pointed front edge with black top and center.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in southern Asia, in a large portion of central and eastern India, south-western India and Sri Lanka. Lives in open forests, forest edges, plantations and woodlands, in hilly terrain.
IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is now declining in western India and Sri Lanka because of deforestation. It now mostly occurs in protected areas away from cities.
