Notes : No subspecies known.
Total length of 46 cm for a weight of 800 g. Long and curved black bill, black bare face. Plumage mostly black with grey edges to breast feathers. Parts of wings, lower breast and belly bright red. Males have small red ear-spot.
Range and habitat
The species is endemic to New Guinea and occurs in most montane areas of the island. Only occurs in forests (mostly primary montane forests), up to 2000 m.

CITES : Appendix II
Status : This species has been declining in many parts of its range and has disappeared from forests near human settlement because of over-hunting.
