Notes : No subspecies known.
Adults can reach a diameter of 45 cm. Its ground coloration is usually brown to nearly black with big and small yellow spots with dark edges. Rows of small yellow spots are found on the disk’s margins.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, in Brazil, where it can be found in the Rio Araguaia and Rio Tocantins basins. Lives in sandy or muddy river bottoms.

Status : This species has a small range but its population has recently increased in the Tucurui reservoir. Occasionally caught for the aquarium trade.
