Identification
Adults can grow to a body length of 220 cm, shoulder height of 1 m and weight around 300 kg. Very thick backward-oriented horns (thicker with males). Compact body. Fur is dark grey-black with lighter area on chin and neck.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-east Asia and is endemic to the island of Mindoro, in the Philippines. It is now confined to high montane areas. Lives in open montane grasslands above forested areas, upland forests, to 2000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is nearing extinction because of habitat destruction and hunting pressure. All of its former lowland habitat has been cleared.
