Adults can reach a length of 16.5 cm for a weight of 29 g. Short wings and long tail, small gray bill. Gray head with black bands and white supercillium, Gray nape and breast, rest of plumage brown with dark streaks on wings. Female duller.
Range and habitat
This subspecies is found from Crimea and Caucasus to west Asia, east to Mongolian Altai. The species occurs in southern Europe, North Africa, central Asia. Lives in conifer forests, mountains near ravines and rocky slopes, up to 4000 m.

Status : The species is still numerous but European populations have been steeply declining because of destruction of habitats and monocultures.
