Female mostly dark olive with streaked head and upperparts, yellow eyebrow and throat. Male shiny black with head entirely bright yellow, black band from black bill to eye for this subspecies.
Range and habitat
Subspecies occurs in South America, from Panama to Colombia and northeast Peru, east to Guianas and Brazil. Found in marshes, humid savannas, mangroves and plantations.

Status : This species is common but could be vulnerable from habitat loss and pollution. Subspecies bogotensis has a very small range and is likely threatened.
