Adults can grow to 86 cm in length for a weight of 3.6 kg. Plumage grey-brown with black stripes on flanks and belly, white undertail and black flight feathers. Forehead white broadly edged black. Bill is pink for this subspecies.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from Eastern Siberia in north Asia to Arctic Canada, it winters in China and Mexico. Species also found in northern Europe and Alaska. Lives in open tundra near marshes and lakes. Winters in open areas.

Status : The species is very numerous and widespread. This subspecies has seen some local declines due to habitat loss and hunting, especially in China.
