Identification
Adults can reach a length of 54 cm for a weight of 939 g. No sexual dimorphism. Face is whitish-grey, back of head is black with metallic green color. Neck and breast black with white stripes. Brown flanks. Black back with white edges.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in South America from Central Argentina and Chile to Falkland Islands. Winters north to Paraguay and south east Brazil. Lives in shallow lakes, streams, marshes and ponds with dense vegetation.

Status : The species remains fairly common to locally common in its range. No notable declines despite hunting pressure and loss of habitat.
