Identification
Body up to 125 cm, weight to 6.5 kg for a wingspan of 210 cm. Dark grey plumage with white flight-feathers and tail. Back of neck and top of head white. Red legs, long grey bill, Bright red bare skin around face.

Range and habitat
Breeds in North-east Mongolia, North-east China and south-east Russia. Winters in eastern China, South Japan and South Korea. Lives in shallow open wetlands, flooded grasslands, lake edges, marshes, mudflats.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix I
Status : Most wild populations are rapidly declining because of warfare, hunting and especially loss of habitat (including wintering grounds).
Ex-Situ Programs : SSP in America, EEP in Europe
