The species grows to 46 cm in length for a weight of 550 g, females are heavier than males. Dark grey head with concealed crest. Dark brown wings and back. Breast and belly white with vertical and horizontal rows of large brown spots.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in the Visayas and Mindanao. Species also found from India and Sri Lanka to China, Taiwan, south to Malaysia and west Indonesia. Lives in forests with clearings, often near watercourses, sometimes near villages.

CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is apparently still locally common but it can be easily overlooked. Deforestation is a major threat in Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.
