Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 60 cm. Head flattened, very long barbels around mouth, tail fin has small extensions. Entire body (except brown head) covered with dark brown and white vertical (sometimes curved) bands.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, in the Amazonian basin, only from Upper Rio Madeira and Caqueta region in Colombia, Peru and north west Brazil. Occurs mostly around cataracts and white-water rivers.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species’ status has yet to be assessed but it is considered to be uncommon to rare within its range. Still caught and sold for international trade.
