Identification
Adults can reach a length of 130 cm for a weight of 44 kg. Eyes placed almost lower than mouth. Adults are silvery grey to dark grey with reddish tinge on belly and anal fins. Juveniles have two large dark bands on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, in the basins of Chao Phraya, Mekong and Maeklong rivers. Lives only in large rivers.

Status : The species is close to extinction in many parts of its range because of pollution and overfishing of adults. Very important aquaculture species.
