Identification
Adults can reach a length of 21.5 cm. Body is long and fairly slender. Big eyes. Old specimens tend to have transparent cheek scales. Coloration gray to silvery gray with a single rectangular black spot on flanks. Dark lower tail fin.

Range and habitat
The species is found in South America , from Venezuela and Guianas to Peru, North Bolivia and central Brazil. Occurs over rocky bottoms in fast flowing rivers.

Status : The species’ status in the wild has yet to be assessed but it is thought to be locally common to abundant in lower parts of rivers within its range.
