Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 86 cm for a weight up to 8 kg. Coloration very variable, usually greenish to silvery-grey with dark-edged reddish spots all over its flanks, tail, pectoral and dorsal fins. Anal fins red with white edges.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in north America, in rivers, lakes and sea shores of eastern Canada and USA. Also occurs in Great Lakes area and Mississippi river. Breeds in lakes and small to medium rivers, sea close to shores.

Status : The species is very common around its range and has been introduced in many areas around the world. It currently faces no known threats.
