Identification
Adults can reach a body length of more than 30 cm for a wingspan up to 1.40 m and a weight of 800 g. One of the world’s largest bat species. Black wings, black fur with golden to silvery hairs on shoulders and breast. Orange eyes.

Range and habitat
This species is endemic to the Comoros Islands and only occurs on Anjouan and Moheli islands. Lives in montane and submontane forests in river valleys, from 500 m.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is highly endangered by ongoing deforestation and the impact of cyclones. It could become extinct soon if no action is taken.
