Up to 115 cm body length, shoulder height of 75 cm, weight of 41 kg. Males are larger than females. Very long hairs on back forming a mane. Muzzle black, chin and breast black. Grey fur with black bands on flanks and legs. Bushy tail.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in north-eastern and east Africa. Species found in most of northern and east Africa, south to Tanzania, Arabian peninsula, east to India. Lives in arid grassland, thorn bush country, open woodlands, up to 2500 m.

Status : The species is widespread but globally uncommon. The true trend of each population and subspecies remains poorly understood and little studied.
