Identification
Body length of 63 cm, tail length of 80 cm, weight of 9 kg. Nominate subspecies has a bright coppery-red to golden-red fur all over body. Males are significantly larger than females. Other subspecies are clearer or duller.

Range and habitat
This species is found in South America, from Colombia and north-west Venezuela to Peru and north-wester Brazil (mostly around upper Amazon). Subspecies occurs from Venezuela and Colombia to east Ecuador and Peru. Found in most types of forests, including mangroves, up to 3200 m.

Status : This species is still widespread and locally common but some declines have been noted because of hunting for food and habitat loss.
