Identification
Body length up to 45 cm, tail length to 65 cm for a weight up to 1.9 kg. Male is entirely black. Female is bright chestnut brown with white areas on legs, belly and around face. Black hands. Eyes of both sexes bright turquoise blue.

Range and habitat
Endemic to a very small area in North Madagascar between rivers Andranomazala, Maevarano and Sandrakota. Lives in primary, secondary and disturbed subtropical forests.

IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : One of the world’s most endangered primate species, threatened by habitat destruction, hunting and trapping. Occurs in protected areas.
Ex-Situ Programs : SSP in America, EEP in Europe
