Notes : No subspecies known. Sometimes, C. milneedwardsii, C. thar and C. maritimus are treated as subspecies.

Identification
Adults can grow to 155 cm in body length, 94 cm in shoulder height and a weight of 140 kg. Small dark silvery-grey mane on neck, greyish-white lower cheeks and chin. Rest of body hair is entirely black becoming slightly lighter on legs.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-east Asia, from extreme south Thailand to most of Peninsular Malaysia (except far south) and most of western Sumatra. Lives in montane areas and steep cliffs in forests, scrublands and grasslands.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is globally threatened by loss of habitat and illegal hunting throughout its range. Some populations have been relocated to safer areas.
