Body length of 2.80 m, shoulder height 1.46 m and weight up to 300 kg. Unmistakable, relatively short but large head, small ears, long erect black mane, black legs and tail. Rest of fur dusty beige to brown-beige. Very large round hooves.
Range and habitat
The species’ wild populations of today have all been reintroduced. They occur in wildlife reserves around Mongolia and north-central China. Lives in dry grasslands, steppes and semi-deserts. Historical habitat unknown.

Status : This subspecies (also treated as a full species) is the last wild horse species. It has been successfully reintroduced and populations are monitored.
