Identification
Body length of 106 cm, shoulder height of 50 cm, weight up to 42 kg. Stocky body, laterally compressed. Big head with small ears. Hairs black with gray to white tips giving speckled aspect. Black belly and legs, white collar from chin to back.

Range and habitat
The species occurs from south Texas, New Mexico and Arizona to north-Argentina, east Bolivia and Peru. Lives in wetlands, grasslands, forests, arid areas and deserts, up to 3000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species might become threatened in a near future as many of its populations are declining because of overhunting and habitat destruction.
