Identification
Reaches from 40 to 50 cm in length. Tail with rows of sharp spines. Coloration highly variable with black belly, usually dark head (especially for males). Back can be yellow-green, beige, dark green, bright orange or even red.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in north-eastern Africa, in Morocco around the Atlas mountains and in north-east, north-west and south-west Algeria. Occurs in desertic and other arid areas with rock and sand.

IUCN RED LIST : NOT LISTED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species hasn’t been assessed, it seems to remain numerous, at least locally, within its range.
