Identification
Adults can grow to 22 cm in length for a weight of about 50 g. Very similar to A. ochraceus but darker and without olive tinge. Grey cheeks and back, brown crest, wings, tail. Chestnut vent, beige-grey to light brown belly.

Range and habitat
This subspecies is endemic to Borneo and occurs in the different mountain ranges of the northern parts of the island, except Mount Kinabalu area where nominate subspecies occurs. Lives in tall montane forests with bamboo and conifers, from 500 to 2650 m.
