Identification
Body length of 100 cm, tail length of 41 cm, weight of 15.5 kg. Stocky built, short tail and large head. Coloration beige-brown to gray-brown with black-edged dark brown blotches all over body. Subspecies clearest (yellower) and largest.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from central and south Brazil to Paraguay and north Argentina. Species also found from extreme south Texas and Arizona to south Brazil and Bolivia. Lives from semi-arid open woodlands and shrublands to rainforests.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix I
Status : This species has a very large range and seems fairly safe. It has declined in the past because of poaching and hunting for its fur.
