Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 120 cm for a weight of 32 kg. Elongated oval-shaped and laterally compressed body with a round forehead and large mouth. Coloration silvery grey with black spot on top of gill coverts.

Range and habitat
Atlantic Ocean, east from Portugal to Angola, including western Mediterranean Sea, and west from South Canada to Uruguay. Lives in offshore waters, coastline in shallow flats areas, depth down to 300 m.

Status : The species has a very large range and remains at least locally common. Overfishing led to local declines in some populations.
