Identification
Adults can reach 20 cm in length for a weight of 280 g. Large and prominent incisor teeth, conical head, very small eyes. Fur color ranges from dark brown to black with a white marking on top of head. Very long facial whiskers.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in most of southern Africa, from Namibia and Zimbabwe to South Africa. Lives in semi arid grasslands, savanna and scrubland with sandy soil.
