Identification
Adults can grow to 51 cm in length for a weight of 1.8 kg. Coloration sandy beige with dark-edged flower-like grey to bluish-white blotches on back. Three large dark blotches on lateral line. Fins with three rows of black and white blotches.

Range and habitat
The species is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from East and South Africa to south Japan, north Australia and east to Hawaii, Revillagigedo and Clipperton islands. Lives in coastal coral reefs, on sandy bottoms, down to 150 meters deep.

Status : This species has a large range and parts of it lie in protected areas. It is caught for food but there is no data on sustainability of this activity.
