Notes : No subspecies known.

Identification
The species grows to about 36 cm in length. Very similar to A. bifasciatus with black dots on flank scales, two black bars, yellow fins and snout. It can be told apart especially by a conspicuous black margin on dorsal fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Indian Ocean around east and southern coasts of Oman and from Djibouti to South Africa, Madagascar and Mauritius. Lives in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, bays and reefs, down to 50 m.

Status : The species is a recent split from A. bifasciatus. The impact of fisheries and possible habitat loss remains unknown at this point.
