Notes : 21 other subspecies known. Total number of subspecies recognised varies from 11 to 23.
Identification
Smaller than Eurasian wolf, reaching 1 m in body length and weight of 32 kg. Elongated head with slender muzzle, thin tail with dark tip, clear legs. Rest of fur variable, from light brown to grayish. Fur much lighter than for other Canis lupus subspecies.
Range and habitat
This subpecies occurs in South Asia, mostly in peninsular where it has a patchy distribution. Might also be found in Nepal and Bhutan but presence unconfirmed. Lives mostly in dry habitats such as scrublands and semi-arid grasslands.

Status : This subspecies is assessed on its own and is globally threatened because of overpopulation, leading to habitat loss and persecution throughout its limited range.
