Identification
The species can grow to 40 cm in length. Straight forehead, pointed snout and thick lips. Coloration light beige to light grey-white with orange spotting on face. Alternating thick and bright versus broken and paler orange lines on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from east Indian coasts to north Australia, New Guinea and Solomon islands, north to south Taiwan. Lives in coral reefs in lagoons and on continental shelf, from 2 to 80 m deep.

Status : The species has large range and seems to remain common, even in areas where it is heavily exploited by local fisheries.
