Identification
The largest species of its genus, growing to 105 cm long for a weight of 9 kg and a wingspan of 245 cm. Plumage mostly brown to black-brown with white areas on top and bottom of wings and tail. Very large bright yellow bill.

Range and habitat
The species is found in western coastal areas of the Bering Sea, from Russia (sea of Okhotsk) to Korea and north Japan (not breeding there). Lives near coasts areas, along forested banks of large rivers, to 1000 m.

Status : The species has a small declining population. Main threats are loss of habitat and loss of prey and pollution by hydroelectric power projects.
