Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 40 cm for a weight of 1.1 kg. Long face and laterally compressed body. Coloration from beige to reddish-grey with dark blue-grey vertical bands on flanks. White-edged spot on caudal peduncle.

Range and habitat
The species is found in Central America and occurs in the Atlantic drainages from Mexico to Nicaragua. Lives in coastal rivers, mangroves and marshes.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a fairly large range and is known to be at least locally common. May be vulnerable to over collection for aquarium trade.
