Identification
One of the biggest bustard species reaching a length of 120 cm for a weight up to 19 kg. Short yellow bill, powerful legs. White belly and face. Neck very thick and grey. Black cap and crest, white belly, brown wings.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from south Angola to Zimbabwe, south to South Africa. Species also found from Somalia and Ethiopia to north Tanzania. Lives in grasslands, scrublands, savannas and floodplains with short grass, to 2000 m.

Status : The species has declined in many parts of its range because hunting, disturbance from humane activities and habitat destruction.
