Identification
Powerful hooked red bill with black tip. Blackish-brown head, red eye-ring. Bright blue throat. Bluish plumage, this subspecies being dull dark blue with less green tinge on wings and breast.

Range and habitat
Subspecies occurs from north India to east China, Korea and Japan, winters in Southeast Asia. Found in woodlands, canopy of primary forests, bamboo forests, plantations.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : Species still locally common but vulnerable to deforestation in parts of its range (Philippines, Japan, Indonesia). Insular subspecies status needs updating (especially on Simeulue).
