Identification
Adults can reach a length of 58 cm for a weight of 977 g. No sexual dimorphism. Plumage is brown with grey tinge on breast, becoming rich chestnut brown on head and neck. Black cap and black band from bill to nape. Grey bill.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to the Philippines and occurs in almost all major islands of the Archipelago and some smaller islands. Lives in mostly shallow freshwater rivers and lakes, mountain lakes and mangroves.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has been declining to the point of being locally extinct because of intense trapping and hunting and habitat destruction.
