Identification
Adults can grow to 70 cm for a weight of 1.8 kg. Male unmistakable, grey-beige plumage with darker wings, rich brown breast. Iridescent green neck and head with white collar and yellow bill. Female mottled brown with dirty orange bill.

Range and habitat
The species breeds in most of Europe, northern Asia and northern North America. It winters south to north Africa, south China, Mexico and Cuba.

Status : The species is common to abundant in many parts of its range and often regarded as an agricultural pest. Occasionally shot and persecuted.
