Adults can grow to 63 cm in length for a weight of 1.3 kg. Head light grey with dark cap and eye band. Rest of body dark grey-brown with thin clear edges to feathers. Breast lighter grey. Black bill with bright yellow tip. Orange-red feet.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Asia and breeds in south-east Russia, Mongolia and north China. Sedentary populations in central and south-east China. Lives in inland and coastal freshwater wetlands with abundant aquatic vegetation.

Status : The species is common within its range despite hunting pressure and locally loss of habitat. Slowly spreading its range to north Russia and Japan.
