Identification
Adults can reach a length of 47 cm for a weight of 1020 g. Males are black with purplish to green iridescence on cheeks, crest behind nape and yellow eyes. Grey bill with black tip. Female brown with small crest and clear belly.

Range and habitat
This species breeds in most of Europe and northern half of Asia. Winters in south Europe and south Asia. Resident population in western Europe. Lives in freshwater lake with emergent vegetation, open waters, sluggish rivers.

Status : The species is common and many of its populations are stable or even increasing. It has declined in some areas because of intensive agriculture.
