Identification
Adults can reach a maximum size of 110 cm for a wingspan of 1.80 m and a weight of 6.5 kg. Very variable but unmistakable. Black head and neck with white cheek patch. Rest of plumage brown-grey. Subspecies is larger with longer bill.

Range and habitat
The species breeds in most of north America and winters in south USA. This subspecies breeds in central and eastern Canada, winters in east USA. Lives in almost any possible habitat, always near water.

Status : The species is very common around the world and has been introduced to many different countries. Race maxima has been reintroduced.
