Identification
The species grows to 38 cm in length for a weight of 435 g. Male has greyish-pink head with black crown, black necklace, pink breast with black spots. Female is reddish brown with black spots on breast and whitish breast.

Range and habitat
This species is found in South America, from central Bolivia to south Brazil, south to northern Argentina. Lives in swamps and ponds in well wooded areas and tropical forests, to 2580 m.

Status : The species’ status in the wild is poorly known. It appears to be locally abundant and declining in other places because of habitat loss.
