Identification
The species grows to 25 cm for a weight of 108 g. Head, neck and breast bright orange-rufous to red. Bright red naked skin around eye and lores, dark bill. Brown wings, belly with very broad horizontal black and white bands. Red legs.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Southeast Asia, from south Myanmar and south Vietnam to Malaysia, Greater and Lesser Sundas, and Philippines. Lives in wetlands, wet grasslands, rice paddies, near rivers and lakes, to 1400 m.

Status : The species has a huge range but is globally uncommon and very difficult to observe. Declines have been noted in Vietnam in recent times.
