Identification
Adults can reach 65 cm in length for a weight of 1 kg. Black cap with black and white ornamental plumes. Black bill. Subspecies with chestnut brown cheeks and breast, creamy-beige belly, white shoulder. No visible clear supercilium.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Philippines, Java, Bali and Borneo. Species found from Indonesia and Philippines to Palau, Australia and New Caledonia. Lives around edges of swamps, lakes, pools, mangroves, rivers and coasts with forests.

Status : The species is locally common but has become much rarer now in Philippines, Indonesia and parts of Australia because of habitat loss and hunting.
