Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 76 cm for a weight of 1.2 kg. Plumage entirely dark brownish-gray. Beige spot on cheeks, green iridescence on wings. Bill grey and black. This subspecies is browner than grey, with less red on bill.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from Senegal to Kenya, south to Zambezi valley. Species occurs in subsaharan Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia, south to South Africa. Lives in open grasslands, savannas, marshes, usually near rivers and streams.

Status : The species is globally common and numerous within its range. West African population is becoming rarer. Formerly heavily hunted in South Africa.
