Adults can reach a body length of 61 cm for a weight of 734 g. Black legs, fairly short curved pink bill, bright red when breeding, red skin on lores. Plumage black with dark green iridescence on wings. Brest, neck and head brownish.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, in the highlands of central Peru to south Bolivia, north Chile and north-west Argentina. Lives in high altitude puna, swamp areas and pasturelands, from 2200 to 4800 m.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is still numerous but its populations are declining because of habitat loss. Sizeable flocks still locally occur.
