Identification
Very large hornbill reaching 100 cm in body length and 2.5 kg.Bill pale horn-colored with large parallel oblique black ridges. Blue and violet face skin, red throat pouch. Female all black, male with bright rufous neck and breast. White tail.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in South East Asia, from northern India, Nepal and Bhutan to Myanmar, south China and eastwards to Northern Vietnam. Lives in dense hill and montane forests, from 150 to 2900 meters.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species has been declining in most of its range because of widespread deforestation and illegal hunting for meat, casque and feathers.
