Identification
The species grows to 70 cm in length for a weight around 1.2 kg. Plumage entirely black with dirty beige-brown band on tail. Male has black bill, casque and large light blue skin patches around eyes and cheeks. Female has clear bill.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-East Asia, from South Myanmar and Thailand to Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. Subspecies found in mainland part of range. Lives in dense foothill forests, preferably near rivers or gorges, to 1300 m.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED

Status : The species is widespread but only locally common, found mostly in protected areas. It can survive in selectively logged forest.
