Identification
The species grows to 65 cm in length for a weight of 900 g. Tail, crest and wings dark brown to black. Cheeks, breast and belly rich chestnut brown, darker for female. Blue orbital ring. Male has horn-colored bill, female has black bill.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South East Asia, in most of southern Myanmar and adjacent south-west Thailand. Lives in evergreen and deciduous hill forest with denser trees, up to 1500 m.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species has the smallest range of any mainland hornbills and is vulnerable to deforestation because of agricultural practices. Needs reassessment.
