Identification
Adults grow to 65 cm in length for a weight of 1.6 kg. Wings and back dull brown-black, all white tail. Belly, breast and neck rufous brown. Red and yellow bill. This subspecies has a lower casque that curves to follow the beak’s curve.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to the southern half of Philippines. This subspecies occurs on Samar, Calicoan, Buad, Biliran, Leyte, Bohol and Panaon islands. Lives in primary evergreen forests and tall secondary forests, up to 2100 m.

Status : The species is still locally common but has declined in many other areas because of deforestation, habitat fragmentation and, locally, hunting.
